In 1647, a power mill was created making Milton one of the most important towns in the region at the time. It was initially created to take complete advantage of the water power available from the many rivers and tributaries running through it.

18th century Milton was very industrial and had sawmills, paper mills and iron slitting mills. Milton is also the place where the first chocolate factory was created.
