Best Boston Suburbs Schools

Let’s take a look at the top 10 Public High Schools in the Boston Metro Market according to Boston Magazine. Why do we look at the Boston Magazine’s rankings? It’s because they offer statistical analysis… And I am a guy that is all about the stats. 

Speaking of the stats, keep in mind that Massachusetts literally has the best school system in the country. So a school ranked 30 in Massachusetts is a darn good school compared to other states. Think of this list as almost the best of the best… of the best list.

Number Ten is Littleton High School which has a total enrollment of 451 students. Littleton has an average class size of 13.9 while their student to teacher ratio is 13.1 to 1. The 10th grader proficiency percentages were 84% for English and 82% for Math. The SAT averages were 615 for Reading and 620 for math. The 615 average was the lowest score posted in this top 10 list. They also had the lowest graduation rate at a still very respectable 95.4% with 89% of students attending college. The median price for a house in Littleton in 2022 was $735,000. Number Nine is Dover-Sherborn Regional High School. They have an enrollment of 657 Students while having a class size of 15.5. The Student to Teacher ratio is 12.4 to 1. Dover took the top marks for both the English and Math Proficiency percentages with 96% and 93% respectively. Their students' average SAT score was 631 for Reading and 642 for Math. The school had a 97.1% graduation rate with an 80.6% attending college rate which was the lowest on the top ten list. Number Eight is Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School has an enrollment of 1,513 students and had the highest average class size with 17.8 kids per class. That being said, their student to teach ratio was 12.1 students to one teacher. They scored 84% for both the English and Math proficiency while having an average SAT score of 629 for Reading and 645 for Math. The student graduation rate was 97.9% while 84.1% of students attended college. This high school serves the town of Lincoln which had a median sales price of $1.63 million. Number Seven is Wellesley High School which has a total enrollment of 1,406 students. The average class size came in at 15.1 students with a student to teacher ratio of 11.9 to 1. The 10th grader proficiency percentages were 93% for English and 88% for Math. Wellesley had the highest SAT scores for both English and Math at 657 and 670. Number Six is Acton-Boxborough Regional High School which has a total enrollment of 1,703 students. This was the biggest enrollment in the top 10 list. The average class size was 15.8 students with a student to teacher ratio of 13.3 to 1. The proficiency scores were 91% for English and 86% for math. They had an average score of 651 for Reading on the SATs with 683 for Math. The graduation rate was 98.8% while 87.5% of students attended college. Number Five is Wayland High School which has a total enrollment of 831 students. The average class size is 15.1, while the student to teacher ratio is 11.2 to 1. The student to teach ratio was the lowest on the top 10 list. The 10th grader proficiency percentages were 89% for English and 80% for Math. For SAT scores they averaged 645 for Reading and 657 for Math. Meanwhile 99.1% of students graduated with 82% attending college. The median price for a house in Wayland in 2022 was $1.047 million. Number Four is Manchester Essex Regional High School. Total enrollment at Manchester is 450 students with an average class size of 12.4 students. The teacher to student ratio was the lowest on the list at 10.3 to 1. The 10th grader proficiency scores were the worst on the list with 82% for English and 71% for math. The average SAT score for Reading was 617 while the Math score was 626. The graduation rate was 97.6% with 81.3% of students attending college. This high school serves the town of Essex which had a median sales price of $765,000 and the town of Manchester by the Sea which had a median sales price of $1.355 million. Number Three is Hingham High School with an enrollment of 1,205 students. Hingham actually had the lowest average class size with 7.9 students while their student to teacher ratio was 12.6 to 1. 95.9% of their students graduated with 83.2% attending college. 10th grader proficiency scores were 91% for English and 82% for Math with 619 for the average Reading SAT score and 615 for Math. The Math average SAT score was the lowest on this top 10 list. The median price for a house in Hingham in 2022 was $1.250 million. Search all Hingham Homes For Sale.

Number Two is Winchester High School. The average class size was 9.1 students with a teacher to student ratio of 13.6 to 1. The 13.6 students to one teacher was the highest for the top 10 list. The total enrollment is 1,349 students and had a graduation rate of 98.9% with 83.7% of students attending College. 10th grader proficiency scores were 89% for English and 87% for Math with 627 for the average Reading SAT score and 643 for Math. Number One is Weston High School. Total enrollment is 638 students with an average class size of 11.7 and a teacher to student ratio of 11.3 to 1. It is true that they were the only school in the top 10 to have a 100% graduation rate and had the highest attending college rate at 90.2%. But what I found interesting is that they were not the top score for Proficient or higher scoring for English and Math and were not the highest SAT score averages for reading or math either. 10th grader proficiency scores were 84% for English and 85% for Math with 638 for the average Reading SAT score and 657 for Math. I will say, don’t take this list for gospel. Dig into the list. As a great example, Boston Latin School is consistently ranked as one of the top schools in the country. It’s ranked number 30 on this list. It has an enrollment of 2,416 students with proficiency percentages of 96% which equals the top number for the top 10 list on English and 98% which smokes Dovers top score of 93. The SAT scores of 649 and 660 are extremely respectable too. But Boston Latin is in the Boston School district and is a school that students must apply to… So maybe that is why it’s lower on the list. 

The point is, dig into the data on the list and remember that a school ranked 50 on the list does not mean they are a bad school. Again, the state has the best schools in the country. This list is the best of the best of the best.  This is also the 2023 list. Keep in mind that they come out with a new list each year.
